Music Lessons

Singing, guitar and singing/guitar music classes are suitable for all ages and all levels of experience. Deb also tutors songwriting, electric guitar and ukulele on request.

Whether you’ve had lessons before or have been playing and/or singing without lessons, you’ll leave with new tools and knowledge, feeling confident and inspired.

Singing lessons
Byron Bay

Even if you’ve been told you couldn’t sing as a child, you’ll discover the fun and freedom of unearthing your unique voice.

If you’re already singing, vocal training will help you build on your skills by exploring and improving your natural voice.

Classes cover: breath work, expanding your vocal range, pitch, tone, resonance, dynamics, harmonies, microphone techniques, basic anatomy and sight reading.

We also focus on performance, different styles of music, musical theatre, finding your ‘true’ or ‘natural’ voice, and caring for your voice through warm-ups and warm-downs.
And just singing and having fun!

NOTE: vocal exercises can be recorded on your smartphone.

Guitar lessons
Byron Bay

Guitar lessons are customised for the individual student.

In the beginning, we explore: Do you have any specific goals? Do you want to create a set list to go busking? Play at an open mic night? Write your own music? Sit around a campfire, play at home or start a band? What styles of music do you like? What level are you? Have you had any experience, or do you just want to get started exploring and have fun?

Classes cover: open chords (and chord formulas), strumming patterns, fingerpicking, power/bar chords, timing, different styles of music, opening tunings, percussive techniques, introduction to guitar scales, creating lead breaks, and songwriting.

Please note: general, basic music theory is covered, but not in-depth music theory or sight reading for the guitar. I do not have an extensive theoretical background for those wishing to dive deep into theoretical concepts.

NOTE: strumming patterns or songwriting ideas can be recorded on your smartphone.

Singing and guitar lessons Byron Bay

A common request is wanting to learn to sing and play the guitar together. Both children and adult students will leave their first class being able to sing and play something!

We follow all the usual learning principles for the guitar, but the initial focus is more on timing (chords, strumming, fingerstyle) and vocal placement within the songs.

There is a swathe of songs and other resources to choose from, and easy enough to get you started. These classes often include handy singing tips and techniques as we go along.

“My daughter Lily-Grace, a 15-year-old singer/songwriter/guitarist, had her first guitar lesson with Deb when she was only six years old.

Deb certainly got her off to a brilliant start on her musical journey, and she continues to be a great asset to us with her ongoing support, knowledge and expertise.

Deb is an excellent teacher, a lovely person, and a great mentor. Her approach to teaching meets the individual needs of each student as she understands that one size does not fit all."
